TO NOBODY

That special quality of atmosphere

Every now and then in this business I come across a restaurant that has that special quality of atmosphere that goes with good service and fine food.

.gifSuch a place is the To Nobody Restaurant (Yes, that's right, To Nobody!) in Tewan Road. Owned and operated by a jolly, rotund and bearded German by the name of Joerg whom, given his stature and nature, one could well imagine banging a beer stein on a table and singing bawdy German songs at the Munich Beer Fest. When I asked him about the name of his restaurant he explained that when he came to Chiang Mai a few years ago he was a ‘nobody' and so he followed suit with the restaurant. However, both he and his restaurant are ‘nobody' no longer, as this well-appointed place has no shortage of patronage, and a glance at the menu will tell you why. Among the soups available is the famous Bouillabaisse, a temptation that was difficult to resist. For aperitifs one could choose from such items as smoked duck breast on cognac and marinated tangerines or baked goat cheese with olive, chillies and garlic on baguette amongst others, and the salads included tomato with mozzarella, Italian basil and toast. So that will give you just a small idea of the variety of specialties to choose from, and the list goes on and on. Needless to say, Khun Joerge himself is the chef.

.gifI must mention here the fish dishes available, as these include such items as smoked rainbow trout and smoked salmon. What makes these rather special is that Khun Joerg imports and smokes them on his own premises to ensure freshness and flavour. Quite frankly, I find smoked salmon the most delicious of all fish dishes and these were as good as it gets. Given that this is a German restaurant it is only natural that items like pork knuckle with sauerkraut, potatoes and salad are on the menu along with a German butcher's plate with sauerkraut, potatoes and breadbasket and pork fillet, monastery style.

.gifIndulging my particular penchant for sausages I tried the plate of several varieties with mashed potato and cooked just as I like sausages cooked.

.gifIf you are a vegetarian then those dishes are available also or you may lean towards some roast lamb. One of the specialties of the house is a party dish that includes a five-litre German pilsener beer that sits on the table so you may pour you own drinks as required, and this goes with all the spare-ribs you can eat.

.gifAll in all, I can say this is one of the finest restaurants of its type in Chiang Mai.
