The SAN MIGUEL
CHIANG MAI INTERNATIONAL CRICKET SIXES Text : Various
Images: Gymkhana Club
Straight bat
"Cricket!" you're saying. "In Chiang Mai?"
Well, if you haven't been here long, Chiang Mai
has the ability to surprise you on a number of
counts. And where cricket is concerned, it can cause
you multiple surprise, since it's not only played here
regularly, but played annually - and right at the
beginning of this month (in fact from the 29th of March and
for the first five days of this) - by
internationally-famous cricketers, as well as by some less-well-known
but nonetheless talented local lights.
Yes, it's the time for the Chiang Mai International Cricket
Sixes, played at the Gymkhana Club, one of the oldest sporting clubs
in Asia.
But let Eric Little, one of the organizers, put you in the
picture himself.
"What's so special about the Chiang Mai Sixes? For a start
it runs for 7 full days with 14 to 16 matches per day. That is 98
games in seven days. Yes, the matches are short, with only six
players per team, each team bowling only five overs so the action is
fast and furious. A winning score is usually 70 runs or more so there
is plenty of big hitting.
Zat!
Many Test and International cricketers have played in
the Sixes over the last 20 years and enjoyed the hospitality of
Chiang Mai and the cricket. This year is the 21st year of the Sixes here
and is now being sponsored by San Miguel.
With teams from 16 different countries the tournament
certainly is an International cricket event of considerable standing.
With the huge number of people coming to Chiang Mai to
play, watch or officiate during the tournament it is estimated that there
is excess of 30 million baht spent in Chiang Mai during the
seven days. One of the most important tourist-related events in Chiang
Mai each year just for its sheer size and income-generating in the
community."
Mike McCune, another of the organizers adds,
"So far, team entrants are from Australia,
Bahrain, Bangladesh, China, England, Greece, Japan, Malaysia, New
Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, UAE, and Vietnam - among others.
Individual players come from a number of additional countries, including
India, Sri Lanka, USA, Belgium and Zimbabwe, to name a few. A
number of local Thai cricketers who learned to play in the junior
cricket program in Chiang Mai will be playing, and one of the men's teams
is an all-Thai side from Chiang Mai's development program. The
week also includes an "Old Crocks" (veterans) game. A number of
notable players with international experience are usually on hand and
playing with some of the teams, so who knows what cricket star
you might see?
Swept, sir!
"Ladies are not left out. This year we have three new
teams competing against the perennial champions, Chiang Mai
Chassies. Prem Tinsulanonda International school have put up a team
picked from their teachers and friends. The excitement though this
year will be focused on two Thai teams from the junior cricket
development programs of Chiang Mai and Petchabun. The four teams
will use the "Sawasdee" field in three days of round robin
competition to decide the best two for the finals on the main field Saturday
5th April.
"So now is the time to dust off that old cricket cap and
blazer and get along to the Chiang Mai International Cricket Sixes. Lots
of action-packed cricket, lots of fun and a major measure of
friendly socializing!"
The Chiengmai Gymkhana Club is situated on the old
Chiang Mai Lamphun Road just north of Nong Hoy Market (before the
Holiday Inn Hotel) and is an easy tuk-tuk or
songthaew ride from any part of Chiang Mai. Admission to the beautiful, spacious grounds
of the Gymkhana Club is free and there is ample, shaded seating
for cricket spectators. As always, there will a wide variety of foods
on sale, plus cold San Miguel beer, and other beverages will be
available from the "Boundary Bar" which is located right in the heart
of the action. The Sixes is sure to be a fun-filled seven days and a
big crowd-puller for residents of Chiang Mai and visitors to our
northern city.
Time of play is 8-30am until 6-00pm every day. Food
and refreshments available all day.
