There is certainly no shortage of places to eat beside the Ping River, but the latest restaurant on the waterfront is something a little different. Within the luxurious confines of the newly-opened Sofitel hotel near Changklan Road, the Mira Terrace restaurant is a first-class dining experience at an appetizing price.
With its intoxicating menu of Asian and Western dishes, this is a great place to enjoy fresh pasta, fluffy catfish salad or even a thick, tasty Burmese curry. And even though the wet season has begun to blow heavy rain into Chiang Mai, the Mira is a scenic outdoor setting that can still be enjoyed in the wet thanks to a sturdy roof covering the terrace with its timeless teak and cool colonial whites.
We decided to tackle one of their fusion dishes on the lunch menu, the honey caramelized spare ribs with crunchy curly fries as well as the roasted duck in red curry with grilled pineapple and lychee, a fruity take on a Thai classic. Both tasted as wonderful as they looked, the meat cooked to delicious perfection, so we decided to continue by going overboard on the dessert trolley. First we ordered the creamy tiramisu, then the red cherry cheesecake, closely followed by the blueberry cheesecake. Again, the presentation was immaculate, at least for the split second before each creation was devoured in a sea of spoons. Thankfully, we still had room for the tasty, fresh coffee and chocolates.
The Mira has matched its diverse selection of dishes with an equally complete drinks menu that it plans to further expand in the coming months with the addition of its self-designed cocktails. The wine list features Thailand's increasingly popular PB Khao Yai Reserve and Monsoon Valley, along with more established reds and whites like the South African chardonnay and a Chilean cabernet sauvignon. Wine is served here by the glass, but given the opportunity to make the most of the attractive riverside setting, you'll most likely find yourself drinking by the bottle.
*Mira Terrace is open early for breakfast, also serving a different menu
for lunch and dinner before closing at 12pm daily.
