November: The Art of Life

These films are shown in the lecture room on the second floor of the Media Art and Design Building, Chiang Mai University Art Museum, every Saturday at 6.30 p.m. (Admission Free)

A critically acclaimed iconoclastic film about a possibly gay artist which depicts his life through the well known paintings by Caravaggio himself. This movie is very well presented and was the winner of the Silver Bear award at the 1986 Berlin Film Festival. It drove Jarman to great but short-lived fame before his untimely death by AIDS.

Isabelle Adjani stars as sculptress Camille Claudel whose tragic affair with peer sculptor Auguste Rodin (Gerard Depardieu) drives her beyond the edge of sanity. Adjani was highly praised for her performance but aroused serious controversy by reading Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses as her Cesar award acceptance speech.

Originally written and directed for TV, this dramatic film recounts the short life of painter, Amadeo Modiglaini, who died tragically from a drugs and alcohol overdose in Paris in 1920. Modi stars Richard Berry and Elide Melli.

The film gives us one day in the life of Jean-Michel Basquiat. The young artist is evicted from his apartment and has to roam the street with a painting he hopes to sell to raise money. Through the eyes of the artist, the audience is shown perspectives of the artistic and musical landscape of New York of 1980 - 81.

Chiang Mai is not without good cinemas for film buffs. Although only two cinema operators are competing to attract the big-screen fans, a wide variety of choices are on offer daily from noon to midnight.

A now household name for movie theater buffs in Thailand, Major Cineplex offers a relatively new cinema complex on the fourth floor of Central Airport Plaza. Although the theaters are generally of lower capacity, they boast more comfortable seats and superior audio-visual systems.
