Children's Day

You like kiddies of all shapes, sizes and dispositions? You do? Well, you're going to be in heaven on Saturday the 8th of this month.

It's National Children's Day, and the little perishers - excuse me! - the little darlings are going to be all over the shop from six in the morning till goodness knows what time at night, and it'll be rather difficult to avoid them if you put your nose out of the door any time during the daylight hours. Thailand takes the business of indulging its junior members seriously, believing that this is a good opportunity to help shape them into the future's intelligent, responsible and capable citizens. The records tell us that this gala occasion was first started in 1955 and has been going on ever since with increasing enthusiasm.

The programme of events this year begins, so we hear, with an address by His Majesty the King, and a homily by the Supreme Patriarch. The Prime Minister weighs in too with a maxim of some description. But the fun really starts thereafter, and among the events announced by the Municipality and other public and private bodies are a series of exciting activities and games for kids and / or families, as well as kid's contests in singing ability and other talents. Public organizations are also generally opened for the children. In Chiang Mai, Wing 41 on Suthep Road lets the children enjoy the experience of getting on some of its old classic planes for free, though not actually flying.

Well, fun for everyone more or less below the age of 14 years and about the equivalent size, but unless you want to be like Gulliver on a bad day in Lilliput, you'll avoid places like the Huaey Gaeow Road from the Zoo to the centre of town and anywhere else where kiddy entertainments are on offer. And on Saturday the 8th that's going to be just about everywhere! Have a nice day!
