Door Cafe

The place to make the day start fresh.

It was a bright and beautiful morning. I was walking along the busiest tourist street in town, leading to Loy Kroh ('Float Away Bad Luck') Road, in order to get to the DK book shop. Suddenly, at the corner of the street passing all the bars, I was disturbed, enraptured, by a wonderful odour that made my stomach loop-the-loop and emit appealing noises. And I found myself standing in front of a small, pretty and cozy cafe called Door Cafe…

.gif "Well! Let's let's check this out," I said to my stomach.

.gif Both cause and satisfier of my enrapturement were a Quiche Lorraine and a cup of cappuccino. And the quiche with its crispy skin and tender filling was so toothsome I couldn't help ordering another. Salmon quiche this time - as I'm a salmon lover. Not forgetting also a little side-dish - a plate of Salmon Dill, which goes nicely with a splash of lime…I tell you - protesting meanwhile that I'm not, repeat NOT! a glutton (gourmet not gourmand) - that what I most enjoy is just tucking piece after piece of juicy tasty salmon into my mouth.

.gifFirst things first! Right? I was then set up enough to take a walk around the restaurant just checking what else they had on offer. Fluffy muffins, freshly baked pies, cookies!...they were all waving at me, shouting (like those items in Alice): "Eat me!" Too bad… I have to keep in mind the dimensions of my tummy...Couldn't let all those yummies in front of me take over completely... I had just one, then turned around, closed my ears to their entreaties and waved good by. "Bye-bye, bakeries!" And walked away, proud of my self-control.

.gifHaving had such a great meal - no, such a dainty little snack! - I gave the decor of Door Cafe a once-over. And whadda ya know! I found myself face to face with the propriator, Khun Noi, whom I've known for a long time. After many years of running a classy French restaurant, Khun Noi told me she'd found a new partner - Khun Sandra, a Thai chef who used to work in restaurants and hotels in Singapore for many years. They discovered they shared the same ideas about owning and running a modest, clean and friendly restaurant that serves good food to both Thais and foreigners. And bingo! Here they were. In addition, as Khun Noi has lived in France a while, she speaks French and English fluently, so no problems in communicating with Westerners.

.gifIt was quite late in the morning after this conversation, so when Sandra went back to work, I stayed a bit longer, giving the yummies time to settle down wherever by this time they'd got to. Sitting, reading while sipping a cup of espresso: writing a postcard to my friend in Canada without being hassled. After that, I just said my good byes to the owners and made my way to the book shop.

.gifNow isn't that a great way to start a lazy Sunday? Just don't step on the scales afterwards!.

.gifBy the way, Door Cafe opens its doors at 8.30 in the morning and closes them as late as 11 pm. Give it a try!
