Poi Sang Long
Thai Yai Ordination

.gifIn Thailand and Buddhist neighbouring countries, ordination is one of the most important ceremonies.

.gif If the son of family ordains to be a novice or a monk, we believe that his parents will koh chai pah leung, cling to the hem of monk’s clothes to go to heaven. In Thai Yai or Shan culture there is the same belief. So around March – April there will be poi sang long, a novice ordination of Shan boys in Mae Hong Son which has the biggest Shan community in Thailand.

.gifThe ceremony will be held during several days, depending on each temple. A colourful procession with performances and music will take place and a Shan style fair with food and clothes stalls will also be organized. If you want to see and have more information about this spectacular festival in Mae Hong Son please contact TAT Mae Hong Son Office 053-612982-3. In Chiang Mai a similar ceremony will be held in the first week of April at Wat Papao on Maneenopparat Road, opposite the north moat. For details contact TAT Northern Office Region 1, 053 – 248 604, 248 607.
