26th May: The Seven Samurai (1954)
Japan - 141mins -Unrated Director: Akira Kurosawa
As one of the all time greats and Kurosawa's masterpiece, The Seven Samurai had great impact on many Hollywood films, including John Sturges' The Magnificent Seven. The Seven Samurai is the story of a village in rural Japan during the 16th century which is continually being raided, and the villagers crops and women being plundered, by local bandits. Eventually some of the villagers agree on the desperate option of hiring some ronin - masterless samurai - to defend them. It isn't easy, but eventually they wind up with six genuine and one would-be samurai - the latter played by the immortal Toshiro Mifune. The battles begin, both inside and outside the village, and love plays its part too. If you haven't seen this one, give yourself a treat. And if you have, you'll need no invitation to see it again. It's one of the few films you never get tired of.
