MAZE CAFE'S

.gif
.gif

.gifA Culinary Star is Born.

.gifDespite Maze Cafe's cryptic name, you won't have to look too hard to find this long-awaited addition to Chiang Mai's high-end eating ensemble. Having advertised its forthcoming presence on Boonruangrit Road for some time, Maze has finally opened just down from Ram Hospital and it's been well worth the wait.

.gifThe decor here is hugely impressive. Built around a sharp, cubic structure, Maze's design philosophy "simply modern" says it all. None of the interior is in your face, it's just well-designed and exceedingly functional. "There are not many places like this in Chiang Mai," says the owner, Chanit Choomsang.

.gif Whether you're looking for breakfast, lunch or dinner, there is something on offer for anyone at any time of day from 8:30 in the morning. Taking influences from Lanna, southern Thai, Chinese, Japanese, Italian and even German cooking styles, the menu is a veritable gourmet's holiday through the world's finest cuisine at prices starting as low as 55 baht for dishes like the homely Chiang Mai sausage with fried rice.

.gifThe drinks menu is similarly remarkable. Featuring the famous beans of Wawee Coffee Shop, Maze knows how to brew a good espresso and cappuccino. An array of teas from Thailand and China are also on offer. One of the most forward-thinking aspects of the menu is evident in the wine section. Instead of opting for the usual boxed international red and white for the house wines, Maze instead offers Thailand's Khao Yai, label while sticking to bottled international wines throughout the wine list, which includes a selection from Australia, Chile, New Zealand and South Africa.

.gifFor those that like their drink to pack a bit more of a punch, cocktails and shooters are prepared at Maze's comfortable bar, which stays open until midnight and also serves a selection of beers as well as soft drinks.

.gifThe outside terrace is illuminated by candlelight after dark, a beautiful setting for a drink or meal facing directly on to the moat on the western fringe of the old city. In fact, it's A-Maze-ing.
