Boxing Outfits Muay Thai is simply a martial art and indeed needs no weapon or tools. However, some accessories and outfits are very much in need. Check out the what and why of muay Thai. Text: GM
Groin guard or grajab
Originally made of tree bark or seashells and later replaced by a triangular shaped pillow, the groin guard in its present plastic form was brought to Thailand from Malaysia. Until the 1930s, a kick or knee to the groin was a perfectly legal move.
Gloves or nuam
Today, fighters protect their hands by wearing boxing gloves. But until the 1930s, fighters bound their hands with rope, partially for protection and partially to make the impact of the punches more severe.
Headband or mongkon
An important piece of muay Thai fighting gear, this amulet is blessed by a monk, teacher, or an individual highly regarded by the fighter. It is worn for protection and prosperity. Originally worn throughout a fight, the mongkon is now worn only for the pre-fight ritualized dance, or wai kru.
Armband or prajied
Traditionally red and white, the prajied is worn around the arm during competition and, like the mongkon, is believed to bring good luck. However, unlike the mongkon, the prajied is worn throughout the fight.
Shorts or gaang geng
Like the gloves, today’s muay Thai shorts have been adapted from Western boxing. Previously, boxers could wear any pair of shorts that suited them, but today fighters are required to wear red or blue shorts to represent their side. No belt or rude and intimidating words may be displayed.
Oil or namman muay
Muay Thai oil and liniment combines methyl salicylate and menthol and is used to heat up the muscles and help accelerate blood flow. It is also an excellent relief agent for stiff joints and sore muscles, as well as banged-up bones and tibias.
Socks or tungtao
Worn tightly around the calf, the socks are made without a heel so fighters won’t slip and slide when they prepare to kick or defend themselves against their opponent.
