Sci-Fi, Thriller

Director David Twohy and star Vin Diesel return for this sequel to the 2000 surprise hit “Pitch Black.” Riddick has spent the last five years on the move among the forgotten worlds on the outskirts of the galaxy, eluding mercenaries bent on collecting the price on his head. Now, the fugitive finds himself on planet Helion, home to a progressive multicultural society that has been invaded by the Lord Marshal, a despot who targets humans for subjugation with his army of warriors known as Necromongers. Exiled to a subterranean prison where extremes of temperature range from arctic nights to volcanic days, Riddick encounters Kyra, the lone survivor from an earlier chapter in his life. His efforts to free himself and Kyra lead him to the Necromonger command ship, where he is pitted against the Lord Marshal in an apocalyptic battle with possibly the fate of all beings— both living and dead — hanging in the balance. Also starring Judi Dench, Keith David, and Thandie Newton, “The Chronicles of Riddick” is the first film in a planned trilogy of “Pitch Black” sequels centering on Riddick.

TRAFFIC (1971)

by Jacques Tati with Maria Kimberly • Marcel Fraval • 96 mn

French comedian/director Jacques Tati once again assumes his “M. Hulot” characterization. This time, the ever-bemused Hulot is assigned to deliver an all-purpose recreational vehicle to an Amsterdam auto show. As Hulot, his driver and the auto company’s PR woman set out for the France-to-Holland motor trip, they encounter just about every sort of car-related misadventure known to man, from a slapsticky traffic jam to a malfunctioning service station. Upon arriving in Amsterdam, they learn that the auto show has ended, and now they’ve got to take the same perilous trip back! Though not Jacques Tati’s best effort, Traffic contains some wonderful sight gags tied in with the theme of modern man’s subservience to technology.

Tuesday, July 20 - Friday, July 23
LE QUAI DES BRUMES (1938)

by Marcel Carne with Jean Gabin •  Michelle Morgan • Michel Simon • Pierre Brasseur •  B&W • 91 mn

Adapted from a novel by Jacques Prevert, Port of Shadows (Quai des Brumes) stars that eternal victim of society, Jean Gabin. Having deserted the French army, Gabin ducks into a back alley and meets the lovely Michelle Morgan. He becomes her champion by taking on her evil “protectors” (Michel Simon, Pierre Brasseur), but loses his last bid for freedom—and his life—in the process. Irredeemably gloomy, Port of Shadows was a primary influence in the “film noir” genre pursued by Hollywood in the 1940s. The film was the first of three collaborations between writer Jacques Prevert and director Marcel Carne, culminating in the incomparable Les Enfants du Paradis (44).

Tuesday, July 27 - Friday, July 30
HIROSHIMA, MON AMOUR (1959)

by Alain Resnais Emmanuele Riva • Eiji Okada • Bernard Fresson • B&W • 91 mn

For one day and one night, a French woman and a Japanese man love each other with a burning intensity. And her discovery of Hiroshima, the horror of atomic warfare, brings back to her the memories of a love affair in France with a young German soldier…
