Ready, Chedi, Go!
If there's one Chiang Mai restaurant where you can treat yourself to a sumptuous assortment of dishes nearly all day long, it has to be the Chedi. Housed in the former British Consulate at the Chedi Hotel on the banks of the Ping River, the restaurant pauses between breakfast and lunch before continuing with afternoon tea, hot and cold tapas, then dinner followed by more tapas.
At any other restaurant this might seem a little much, but at the Chedi, not so. With the fine setting of the minimalist, modern hotel with its lush lawns and river views, sitting on the balcony of the Chedi Restaurant just seems like the right thing to do.
The lunch menu offers a selection of international dishes that hit the spot but won't leave you overly full. There is a full range of Thai and western salads such as the crispy classic caesar salad or the more spicy yam hua plee gai, with delicious banana blossom, chili paste and chicken. Sticking firmly to its roots, the Chedi also delivers a range of Thai and Lanna dishes like kao soi gai. As the head chef Marcel Huser says, the Chedi serves up dishes "people would expect to see." Lunch diners can also select from a range of Indian dishes as well as western dishes including gruyere cheese burgers, lobster spaghetti and grilled pumpkin and feta pizza.
Once you've finished that lot get ready for afternoon tea featuring sandwiches, pastries, scones, ice cream and your choice of green or black tea and fresh coffee. Come early evening, the Chedi is already gearing up its hot and cold tapas menus which bring together a range of culinary influences from Spain, of course, but also India, the Middle East and Thailand. Our favorites were the beef tartar with a large dash of firey tabasco sauce and the pan-fried goat's cheese.
After a drink and a few tapas dishes, it is soon time for dinner Chedi-style. Again, Thai, Indian and western dishes are on the menu but the choice is wider and the portions larger, such as the deliciously tender Angus beef and the grilled Tasmanian salmon. Order a glass of chardonnay or shiraz for a perfect accompaniment. And don't worry, once dinner is over there's more tapas where that came from!
