LIVING IT UP: The Ping Nakara– Scenes of the Past Text: Nyanta
Images: S.P.
Apart from the efforts of powerful countries to expand colonization, from 1855 - 1955 foreign cultures were flowing into Thai society as a result of trading, as well as forest concessions near the Ping River granted to two English companies. Friendly relations developed between the cultures and the centrally-located river was a hub for transportation and a channel of commerce for foreign merchants during this historical period in Chiang Mai.
Chiang Mai’s exchanges with foreign countries allowed for the emergence of colonial architecture as interpreted by Lanna craftsmen along the Ping River and today their remains can still be found. However, as the Ping River does not serve the exchange of merchants and customers as it once did, so many of these structures no longer perform their commercial functions. As a result, they’re largely unused and poorly maintained.
However, inspired by the historical significance and aesthetically pleasing nature of these remains, the creator of Ping Nakara decided to restore the once elegant structures, and once again bring life to Chiang Mai’s past so that it may be remembered and enjoyed by generations to come.
The Ping Nakara is divided into nineteen rooms within seven structures. Accommodations vary, comprised of eight deluxe rooms, seven grand deluxe rooms, and four grand deluxe rooms with Jacuzzi. Each one is uniquely designed and fully equipped with facilities to make you feel at home. The overall concept here is based on strategies of the past, when these classic structures would have been built without a blueprint or a photo. Craftsman from different regions individually interpreted the colonial style architecture, adding techniques and styles from their own culture as they crafted each new building. Accordingly, seven structures were built in different form, sharing the same philosophy, but each one reflecting the history and story behind its design. For example, the first structure has a perforated peacock image, the next a sunflower.
Additionally, the hotel and spa stands out from others in that it offers a stunning view of its hand-crafted, graceful design to be appreciated by hotel guests and passersby alike, with a wide view from both the river and the street. Furthermore, the Lanna Architect Association gave it its “Recommended Hotel Design” award and I-Design magazine recognized its superb craftsmanship with their design award. Just five minutes’ walk from the Night Bazaar and not far from town hot spots, the location is the perfect blend of peace and nostalgia, modern convenience and a relaxing, private stay.
