.gifIt’s not often I choose to review a restaurant twice in the comparatively short space of one year. However, my previous visit to the Oriental Garden Restaurant in Loi Kroh Road was such a pleasure I thought that the best thing to do was return and see what has transpired in the past year or so. Let me assure you, the one aspect of the restaurant that is forever a delight is the character of the garden settings, as they are a genuine pleasure. If you wish you may Mim Saisimse to dine inside the restaurant. But, like most people, I elected to eat in the garden setting among the trees and shrubs that make the place a kind of tropical oasis in a busy city. The restaurant opens for breakfast (American, Continental or Oriental plus much more) at 7a.m. and closes 11p.m.

.gifI must mention here a nice new touch in the decor, which has small bonsai trees on each table. But there was yet another reason for my return visit. You see, I had heard that the owner, Khun Ludo, has added some more Northern Thai dishes to his menu, and among them is kaow soy. For those of you who may not be familiar with kaow soy, it is one of those special Northern Thai dishes that is difficult to describe as it has ingredients and a taste all of its own, and a special taste at that. To the dish itself, which contains both soft and crispy noodles, you add the side delicacies of garlic, sour mustard plant, a chilli sauce, and lemon juice to your own taste. I am one of the many who simply cannot resist the temptation of a bowl of kaow soy so I didn’t.

.gif Of course, one dish was not quite enough for myself or photographer Khun Mim, so I scanned the menu for some more exotics. There was any number of truly delicious looking choices including suki yaki, another favourite of mine. A green beef curry with rice looked good, as did the ‘special fried chicken in pandanas leaf’ so they were duly ordered. Both tasted as good as they sounded. I thought it was worth trying a sweet dish, although I frequently skip that because of lack of space - if you see what I mean? But who could possibly refuse a plate of ripe mango, with a white sauce, over sticky rice. I consider mango to be the king of fruits, especially when it is ripe, although Thai people tend to eat it sooner. Now I must warn you that the Oriental Garden Restaurant is an extremely popular eatery. So much so that it is always wise to book your evening table well in advance. You can call them on 053 276 742 and it may save the embarrassment of being unable to be seated.
