From the moment one enters The Tavern, on the Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road, just around the corner as you come off the Nawarat Bridge, you have the feeling of comfort and relaxation.
It is handsomely appointed in the style of an English tavern and is touched off with some attractive decorations and wall paintings. There is no live music but some soothing tape music, which does not drown out conversation, as so often happens. The owner, Khun Glen, tells me they have been open only two months after a spell for renovations. One of the innovations, which is now becoming more evident is having the increasingly popular Chang beer on tap, and I could hardly resist a long cold glass of the same. Another interesting novelty is the fact that, on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, one can drink as much Heineken beer as one wishes to for 199 baht. I didn’t attempt it myself as I was there for other reasons but maybe some other time. Actually the draft beer is very reasonably priced at 99 baht for Chang and 130 baht for Heineken for a two-pint jug.
But now to the important aspect of the food. As there were three of us - the photographer had brought along an assistant - it was time to study the menu. There was really quite a range and included Thai, European, Chinese, and even some Japanese dishes. There was a very impressive choice of imported steaks, for lovers of that style of food, and included T-bone, rib eye, and sirloin, all cooked to your own specification and including two eggs and French fries.
Added to these were club sandwiches, spaghetti, and soups. A wide selection of hors d’oeuvres was available, including garlic bread, spring rolls, and also a range of delectable-looking cocktails. However, one must order as the mood dictates and therefore a plate of steamed shrimp rolls in seaweed was considered a good starting point. Plaa tub tim khatiem, tub tim fish fried in shredded garlic, sounded too good to refuse as did the same fish grilled and done in a special sauce. Then I could not resist one of the house specialties, good old ‘bangers and mash’.
For those poor souls not familiar with the term it is simply grilled sausages served with mashed potato. In this case it came with two servings of potato with both H.P. sauce and/or gravy. Really good sausages are hard to find in Chiang Mai but these were absolutely delicious and were attacked with great fervour. Rounding off the evening was a delightful plate of phon la mai, or mixed fruits. All in all, The Tavern is an excellent establishment for those seeking a pleasant evening out with high-class food, good service, and just the right atmosphere. I recommend it to all.
