DESTINATION: Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden
Text: Pon
Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden was established in 1993 by the Botanic Gardens Organization of Thailand under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. The main objectives of the Garden are to serve as a center of Thai flora for botanical study and research, to render services concerning biodiversity and environmental conservation, as well as to provide an aesthetic place for the public to visit.
Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden (formerly known as Mae Sa Botanic Garden) is the first international standard botanical garden in the country with scientific bases and purposes for its collections, and the provision of botanical education and research. In 1994, the Botanic Gardens Organization was granted permission by HM the Queen to name this northern botanic garden after Her Majesty as "Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden".
Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden (QSBG) is located at the edge of Doi Suthep-Pui National Park in an area of about 1,000 hectares with a wide collection of plant species, 12 exhibition greenhouses, garden and nature trails. It is only a 20 minute drive from Chiang Mai city along the Chiang Mai-Fang Rd. and then heading left for about 12km on Maerim-Samerng Rd, a short distance from the Mae Sa Elephant Camp.
There are four main garden trails, and a Greenhouse Complex for visitors to enjoy various kinds of plants, with both native and exotic species.
The trails are: Arboretum Trail, plants (mostly trees) grouped according to their botanical families), Climber Trail (a beautiful trail with more than 200 species of climbers), The Waterfall and Ornamental Beds (a waterfall and path that leads to the ornamental beds and eventually onto the Thai Orchid Collection), and Medicinal Plants.
The Greenhouse Complex combines four exhibition conservatories: the Tropical Rainforest House, the Arid House, the Orchids and Ferns House, and the Aquatic House.
There are plenty of things to see and to learn here and if one day is not enough, the Botanic Residence, located on the mountainside opposite the garden entrance, is available to you for more.
