At the beginning of this month Chiang Mai will host the Ratchaphruek Festival at the beautiful Ratchaphruek 2006 Garden to celebrate and honor Thailand's beloved King, who ascended the throne over 60 years ago and whose coronation was held in 1950, making him the world's longest-serving monarch. Over 200,000 thousand visitors, made up of Thais from across the country, expat residents of Thailand, and international visitors are expected to attend the festival, which will run from 30 November to 10 December.
A happy aside to honoring His Majesty the King is that Northern Thailand's tourism businesses will get a shot in the arm in terms of publicity, whilst the rural population will enjoy hosting a significant number of tourists to their homes.
On 5 December His Majesty the King will celebrate his 82nd birthday and as such the grandest part of the festival will be the lighting of thousands of candles, offering of prayers and blessings for his continued good health, singing of congratulatory songs, followed by a magnificent display of fireworks and a light and sound show.
The official opening ceremony will be on the first of the month with welcoming parades from all four regions of Thailand. The number nine is considered lucky for Thai people as it also means "progress" or "advancement" if spoken with a slightly varied pronunciation. For that reason Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will deliver the opening address and then join the people in releasing 999 Kom Loi (Sky Lanterns), which will be followed by classical Thai dances with 99 dancers from each of the four main regions of the country.
Throughout the festival, visitors will be able to enjoy a wonderful horticultural exhibition of flowers, trees and fruits; plus sales and competitions of agricultural products, handicrafts and hand-made village souvenirs will also be on offer. The Ratchaphruek Garden was built for the international horticultural expo held in 2006, when around 2.5 million plants and flowers including rare species of orchids were on display, so orchid lovers will find this festival a particular delight.
