WALK UP TO THE WAT PHRA THAT Chiang Mai Celebrates Visakha Puja
Chiang Mai will be celebrating Visakha Puja – the occasion commemorating the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death – on its traditional night of the full moon (2nd June this year) in its customary way.
Groups from the city and all over the North will be gathering at the statue of Khruba Srivichai at the foot of Doi Suthep at approx. 7 p.m. to walk the 14 kms. up to the Wat Phra That (Temple of the Sacred Relic), in order to pay respects at the chedi of the temple at the beginning of the auspicious day.
The procession from the foot of the mountain is expected to number some 1,000 or more people, with monks chanting at the head, dancers pausing every so often to perform traditional dances, and the various groups hauling such impedimenta as gongs, drums and even traditional orchestras up the road, aiming to reach the Wat Phra That in the small hours.
Fortified up there by khau dtom (rice soup), they will pay their respects, play music and generally have fun, making their way down hill in the first light of morning.
It’s an occasion when everyone’s welcome, so if you feel like joining, throw on some traditional-looking clothes and meet us at the Khruba Srivichai statue, just half a kilometre up the road from the entrance to the zoo.
It’ll be a night you’ll remember!
