THE RESORT

.gifI must confess it has been some time since I visited The Resort Restaurant in Charoenraj Road but, as I knew it had recently re-opened after being completely refurbished, now seemed like a good time.

.gifAs expected, the renovations had given a completely new character to the place, and all of it to the good. There is seating for almost five hundred people with no air of overcrowding, as there is plenty of space on all levels. Also, there is a bar where one can sit and enjoy a quiet drink or two before dining if that is your choice. Added to the interior seating is a section of lawn set on the river’s edge where you can sit and eat. There is non-stop music from 7pm until closing time at 1am with an excellent band and vocalist playing and singing all the popular tunes. In other words; all the alterations have been made for the better; and that includes the beautiful waterfall situated right next to the Japanese food bar. Oh, that I forgot to mention. For those who are fond of that type of food, it is readily available and a pretty waitress will come around with that specific menu. To return to the task at hand let me say that they have one of the most extensive and varied menus in town including a number of items rarely, if ever, seen. For example, Burmese sweet curry pork was new to me as was shrimp macaroni. But they are just two of many.

.gifAny Frenchman will be pleased to note that they have snails in red curry, although whether or not that’s how the French eat them I don’t really know. Many other items looked equally attractive, such as roast spareribs with honey, assorted grilled sausages, tofu with crabmeat, and even stir fried pumpkin sprouts. Added to these was a range of soups including both asparagus and corn. I might add here that there is an extensive selection of wines, cocktails, and beer on tap or in bottles. However, for all these available delicacies, I felt a little more pedestrian and decided to go for one of my favourite standard dishes and ordered tom yum goong, which needs no explanation to anyone who has been in Chiang Mai more than two days, and another favourite in woon sen gai. This is fried glass noodles stir-fried with egg and is always a taste treat. The piece de resistance for the evening was a large fruit salad and a special one at that. Large chunks of varied fruits smothered in a special sauce and topped with strips of ham and cheese.

.gifAs you may imagine, it was as delightful as it was different, and an excellent way to wind up a meal. The (new) Resort is undoubtedly one of Chiang Mai’s premier locations for wining and dining as they have it all.
